HADI DOES AN ‘EMPTY VESSEL MAKES THE MOST NOISE’: AFTER MONTHS OF DIRE THREATS, PAS CHIEF SHIES AWAY FROM ADDRESSING TIES WITH PKR

ALOR SETAR: PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang delivered his policy speech at the party’s annual muktamar by completely skirting the hot-button issue of its ties with PKR.

In an address that lasted a little over an hour at the opening of the 63rd PAS muktamar here on Saturday, Abdul Hadi did not make a single reference to the party’s increasingly strained ties with PKR.

Instead, he urged all members to continue championing the party’s mature and prosperous political culture.

“The mature and prosperous political approach we have taken is able to ease tensions among the grassroots, who have been shrouded under an extreme political climate that ultimately only harms the Muslim community.

“We must continue to be steadfast with Islam, so that we do not divert from Islam as our primary policy and purpose,” he told some 1,200 PAS delegates.

Abdul Hadi also said it was regrettable to see some political parties out there “racing to oppose Islam”.

“Such actions, if continued, are the biggest threat to the harmony and religious freedom enjoyed in Malaysia, where Islam is the religion of the Federation,” he said.

Abdul Hadi clarified that the Islamist party was not out to make enemies with other races and religions in this country, but was irked by the chauvinistic ideologies of certain parties.

“PAS is only opposed to the chauvinistic and racist behaviour of certain parties. But what is important is that we continue to highlight Islamic faith as a solution for change in Malaysia,” he said.

He added that PAS would not be forced or blackmailed into stating its stand on any issue, especially when it involves the strategies it plans to adopt.

Calls to cut ties with PKR were a central theme of the PAS wings’ assemblies held on Thursday and Friday.

Both the ulama and youth wings had unanimously approved motions to sever ties with PKR, PAS’ only remaining ally in the Opposition.

However, during his closed-door address on the eve of the muktamar, Abdul Hadi warned delegates not to raise “petty and sensitive issues” which could cause disunity and affect the party’s chances in the next general election.

PKR also sent its vice-president Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin to attend the PAS muktamar as its representative.
