Justice League Gets Full Manga Makeover For New Japanese Series

Batman, Superman and the rest of the Justice League characters have now graced the pages of a manga title in Japan, sporting brightly colored spiky hair and extra-toned hulking physiques.

According to SoraNews24, DC has teamed up with local artists to create a new series titled “Batman and the Justice League”.

The new series, a hybrid of  “manga”  and “amekomi” (term used locally for American comics), is drawn by female manga artist Shiori Teshirogi and made its debut on June 19 in Akita Shoten’s popular Champion Red manga anthology.

Based on the new manga title’s promotional materials, the plot takes on the familiar DC Universe story of how the super-powered heroes banded together to defeat a villainous threat.

In this adventure, Justice League members Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Cyborg will be fighting alongside Batman to fend off a team of villains led by the Joker.

The promo states: “The Justice League is formed in Gotham City to protect the world from a union of villains led by the Joker. Will Batman resist or accept his destiny?”

It is important to note that while Superman, Batman, and recently, Wonder Woman, may be instantly recognizable in Japan and the rest of the world, other Justice League members are still quite unknown in Japan.

While not publicly stated, the manga seems like a means to promote the relatively unknown characters of the DC franchise to the Japanese audience as DCEU’s Justice League movie is about to hit theaters in November.
