GUAN ENG WILLING TO CONDONE EXTREMISM JUST TO WIN OVER MUSLIM HEARTS? PENANG REFUSES TO CENSURE HEADMASTER FOR SAYING IT’S ‘HARAM’ FOR MUSLIMS TO HAVE THEIR HAIR CUT BY NON-MUSLIMS – ‘RELIGIOUS TEACHERS HAVE RIGHT TO SAY WHAT THEY WANT’

NANG will not regulate what religious teachers say, after remarks by a tahfiz school headmaster that Muslims should not get haircuts from non-Muslimsemerged today.

State exco on religions affairs  Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said Shahul Hamid Seeni Muhammad had the right to voice his opinion.

“There will be no such thing (as controlling what tahfiz school teachers say) in Penang,” he told The Malaysian Insight in a WhatsApp message.

“He has the right to his opinion. School management and comments (by individuals) are different matters.”

Shahul Hamid, the headmaster of Maahad Tahfiz Darul Tahzhib in Bayan Lepas, said in a video uploaded on YouTube two years ago that it was haram for Muslims to have their hair cut by non-Muslims.

“From the time I started studying in a pondok school to Form 1 and up until now, I have not allowed any non-believers to touch my head. It is better for us to go to Muslim shops because at least this way, we can help Muslim businesses,” Shahul Hamid said.

Shahul Hamid is not new to controversy as three years ago, he had urged Muslims not to buy curry powder from brands he claimed were “Hindu companies”, such as Baba’s and Alagappa’s.

The ustaz, who has uploaded various videos of his views online, also said it was haram for Muslims to wish others “Happy Birthday” in Arabic.

Malik said the state believed in freedom of speech and interpretation.

“If the people turn away, don’t pay attention to extreme thinking and publicity is not given, they will disappear.

“We are giving them publicity and creating a negative perception of Islam,” Malik said.

Meanwhile, Penang information officer Wan Ji Wan Hussin said there were no rulings in Islam stating that it is wrong for a Muslim to have their hair cut by a non-Muslim woman.

Neither was it wrong to wish others “Happy Birthday”, said Wan Ji, who is also an independent preacher.

“World-renowned scholar Syaikh Salman Auda has said there is nothing wrong with birthday greetings as it is not a matter that concerned religious rituals.

“In 2013, Tok Guru Nik Aziz celebrated his birthday at Karpal Singh’s house. If it were truly haram, Nik Aziz would not have done so,” he said, referring to the late PAS spiritual leader and late DAP veteran.
