WHILE NAJIB & UMNO DISDAINS RM1BIL YACHT BOUGHT WITH STOLEN 1MDB MONEY, EVEN INDONESIA SHOCK AT THEIR PROFLIGACY, PITIES MALAYSIA: IN VAIN, ZAHRAIN TRIES TO DO DAMAGE CONTROL FOR ‘DISAPPOINTED’ NAJIB

MALAYSIA is a victim in the investigation of super-yacht Equanamity, as well as cases linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, the Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia Zahrain Mohamad Hashim said.

In an interview with weekly Indonesian magazine Tempo, Zahrain said the luxury vessel had nothing to do with Prime Minister Najib Razak, 1MDB or billionaire financier Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low.

In Tempo’s March 12-18 issue, an illustration of Equanimity made it to the front page, as the current affairs publication dove into the 1MDB scandal.

The headline, in Indonesian read: “1MDB corruption yacht” (Pesiar rasuah 1MDB).

Zahrain told the magazine that Najib was “disappointed” with the story.

“The prime minister is angry with this story. This is not a true story. He said: ‘I’m really disappointed’,”   Zahrain said.

The 1MDB scandal is being used by the opposition to attack the government as the country would be holding its general election soon, he said.

“We will be facing elections. The opposition will use it (1MDB) to attack the government,” he said, adding that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was leading the charge in linking Najib to 1MDB.

He also brushed off investigations by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) into 1MDB as baseless and “only based on reports and stories”.

“If the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) said 1MDB did money laundering, why is it that the CEO of 1MDB Arul Kanda has not been investigated?

“I feel this is a political game. There are people who want to make the prime minister and Malaysian government look bad,”   Zahrain said.

According to sources, the yacht did not even belong to Low and should not be linked to 1MDB, he said.

“From the information we have, the yacht is not even Jho Low’s. If it is not Jho Low’s, why is it associated with 1MDB and the Malaysian prime minister?

“This is not a Malaysian boat, it has nothing to do with the Malaysian people. It is not the Malaysian people’s yacht.”

Zahrain also said Low, who is rumoured to be a “broker”, did not work with the Malaysian government, 1MDB or even the prime minister, adding that Malaysian investigators have found no wrongdoing in 1MDB’s losses and has cleared all the executives involved.

“There is no case. The police and anti-corruption agency, as well as the attorney-general has found no wrongdoing.

“Parliament is also the same. There are no stolen funds, money missing or illicit cash flow from 1MDB. 1MDB is doing a legit business.”

Equanimity was seized by Indonesian authorities in Bali on February 28 at the request of the FBI, which has opened a criminal investigation into alleged wrongdoing linked to 1MDB.

Last year, the DoJ moved to suspend its civil suits to seize US$4.5 billion in assets bought with money allegedly stolen from the investment fund.

Equanimity, which is reported to have cost US$260 million, is among the assets on the DoJ’s wanted list, along with real estate in the US, jewellery, rare artworks, and Hollywood movie rights.
