DAP: If Adenan’s for autonomy, he must stop army votes
KUCHING: Sarawak DAP Chairman Chong Chien Jen wants the state government to disallow more than 100,000 army and police personnel including their family members from voting for their assemblymen.
He said that the fight for autonomy, as lauded by Chief Minister Adenan Satem should start with the most basic step i.e. Sarawakians voting for the Sarawak government.
“The number of postal voters from West Malaysia will affect the election results to choose the state government. This provides an unfair advantage to BN (Barisan Nasional).
“If it is true that the state government, especially Adenan Satem is fighting for autonomy, then let Sarawakians decide their own state government,” he told a press conference at his office here today.
Chong insisted that the move was better than barring DAP MPs from entering the state.
“Our MPs are only here to help with the campaign. But the army and police voters are voting, affecting the election results,” he claimed.
However, the Election Commission data has shown there are 25,022 absent voters made up of army personnel including their spouses as well as 106 overseas postal voters.
However Chong said the numbers did not include local voters.
He said that in his own seat of Kota Sentosa, there were an additional 400 postal voters, making the total 3,300 while in the new seat of Stakan, almost 47% of about 14,000 voters were made up of postal voters.
“And 80% of them are from West Malaysia. At the same time 6,000 voters have been moved out of Kota Sentosa.
“You know there is no transparency when it comes to army postal votes,” he claimed.
