DAP optimistic PKR can win big in Batu Kitang
KUCHING: DAP has once again urged PKR to focus on its work in the upcoming state elections and honour mutually agreed upon seat arrangements.
These promptings were made by Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chien Jen in the ongoing squabble over overlapping seats between the two Opposition parties.
Chong said negotiations between PKR Deputy President Azmin Ali and DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng had resulted in the reformasi party being handed Batu Kitang, a new seat that can likely deliver a big win for them.
“PKR has the best seat not captured yet by the Opposition. Of all the new seats, Batu Kitang is the only one where Opposition voters are in the majority.
“This seat was carved out of Kota Sentosa and Batu Kawa, which was won by DAP, and by right it should be contested by DAP,” he told a press conference at the party’s headquarters here today.
Batu Kitang is a new area that covers Mile 4, Haji Baki, Pasar Maong, Landeh, Lidah Tanah and Batu Kitang. It has some 20,000 voters.
Yesterday, Sarawak PKR Chairman Baru Bian insisted that the state PKR was not ready to let go of five Dayak majority seats, part of 29 seats that will be contested by DAP announced by Chong on Saturday.
Chong reiterated his stand that DAP would honour the agreement on seat arrangements and would help its partners in Pakatan Harapan.
He said as a party member, Baru should honour the agreement as it was decided upon by his superior and endorsed by PKR President Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail herself.
“Furthermore, Azmin is not a nobody in PKR. He is the deputy president in PKR. If he has no power, who then has power in PKR?” he asked.
