KUALA LUMPUR: Hindraf Makkal Sakthi, a human rights NGO working with displaced estate workers and the stateless, warned the “foreigner Zakir Naik” that it would always come forward without fear to protect the Constitution as well as the principles of Rukun Negara.

Hindraf Chief P. Waythamoorthy, taking the line that Zakir Naik came to Malaysia to pick a fight with the people and pit them against each other, was commenting on the banned preacher’s statement that he does not fear Hindraf.

“The fact that Zakir Naik has publicly declared that he does not fear Hindraf speaks volumes.”

“He fears Hindraf’s bold and firm stand to protect the sanctity of the Constitution.”

He warned Zakir and those behind him who allegedly have a larger agenda to disrupt the harmony and co-existence of the various religious groups in the country.

Being a foreigner, reiterated Waytha, Zakir must first learn and respect the “adat” (Customs) of Malaysians. “The fact that he says he does not fear the police reports lodged against him goes to show his disrespect for the Constitution and the law.”

“This country is governed by Parliamentary democracy and the Constitution. The laws of Malaysia are meant to protect all its citizens, including the 45 per cent non-Muslim communities, and keep them from harm.”

Zakir , continued Waytha, was nobody to challenge and belittle the country’s laws. “The irony was that some people in the country are protecting him and revering him.”

Malaysia has generally been a successful model as a multi-religious and multi-racial country, pointed out Waytha. “We have had our own share of problems, when in rare cases some religious fanatics have uttered words that insulted others and this has been successfully dealt with by the authorities concerned.”

“We stand as a united country in upholding the principles of Rukun Negara and live in peace and harmony. We do not insult other religions.”

Hindraf cautioned the leaders that Zakir has openly promoted terrorism and was being allowed to speak in the country. “The least the government could do was to compel him to retract and repent his previous ideology of promoting terrorism and insulting other religions openly.”

There were many other well-known and learned ulama, both locally and internationally, who could have been invited to teach peace and co-existence, said the Hindraf Chief. “Instead, we are shocked that this character (Zakir Naik) was promoted and given a platform in Malaysia.”
