BETONG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak officially declared open Sarawak’s second Rural Transformation Centre (RTC) here yesterday.

He said he was glad to note that a place like Betong had an RTC to give the local people access to various government services, including medical and banking facilities.

“This RTC which is the brainchild of the government is only the ninth RTC constructed in the country. This is one of the efforts by the government to bring more development to the state,” he added.

He pointed out that as long as Sarawakians continue to vote Barisan Nasional (BN) more development will come to the state, bringing it on par with other states in the country.

Betong’s latest infrastructure is built on the site of the old Betong farmers’ market at Layar junction.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who was also present during the ceremony commented that the RTC was the government’s gift to the people.

“We are looking to build more throughout the country. The government came up with the idea to build a place like this to help folks in the rural areas throughout the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu who attended the ceremony on behalf of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem was happy that Betong now had an RTC.

“People of Betong will find this place useful and helpful. It helps them get access to the various facilities under one roof,” he commented.

Being built along the Pan Borneo Highway, he believed the RTC would also benefit folks from other places. Sarawak’s other RTC is in Bekenu.

Also present were other federal ministers, state ministers, MPs including Betong MP Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and some BN candidates for the coming state election.
