Autopsy: Leptospirosis, not beatings, killed tahfiz student

Tahfiz student Mohamad Thaqif Amin Mohd Gaddafi, 11, had died of a disease and not of the alleged beatings against him, an autopsy found.

Ministry of Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the finding was made by a special investigation committee that was formed to probe the death, which comprises forensics experts who are experienced in handling complicated cases.

In addition, an autopsy was conducted at 6pm on the same day Thaqif passed away, which was April 26. Samples of his blood and tissue were also sent to the Institute for Medical Research and the Chemistry Department for analysis.

“The autopsy found that the tahfiz student had died of disease, and not of trauma or injuries as alleged […]

“The autopsy report has been provided to the Royal Malaysian Police for further action,” he said.

Dr Noor Hisham said the cause of death was the bacterial infection, Leptospirosis.

This was further complicated by necrosis of the skin due to purpura fulminans (a defect in the body’s blood clotting mechanism at the skin), and the formation of microscopic blood clots (microthrombi) throughout the child’s circulatory system that discoloured his skin.

These conditions have led to organ failure, he said.

Thaqif had died during a coma at the Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Baru. By then, his legs had been amputated in a bid to contain the spread of the bacterial infection in a bid to save his life.

It was previously alleged that Thaqif’s death was due to the alleged abuse by his school’s assistant warden in the weeks prior to his death, and his diary purportedly detailed his sufferings.

The police had been investigating the case as murder.- Mkini
