Anti-graft NGO worries over PM’s RM5m funding of MACC body
We are concerned this will pull the wool over eyes of MACC, says C4’s Cynthia Gabriel.
KUALA LUMPUR: A think tank says government monetary support should be allocated in the national budget and should be given to all enforcement and oversight bodies, not just one.
The Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) said it was concerned about selective special allocations of public funds.
Prime Minister Najib Razak had announced a RM5 million allocation for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) Yayasan Prihatin, an organisation formed to provide welfare support for the anti-graft agency’s employees.
“The funds for MACC must have parliamentary oversight,” said C4 executive director Cynthia Gabriel to FMT.
“We are concerned this will pull the wool over the eyes of MACC.”
Najib made the announcement earlier today during MACC’s 50th-anniversary celebration, saying the amount given by the government was also symbolic of his own support for MACC.
Cynthia hoped the anti-graft busters will continue their investigations without fear or favour, even if it involves the prime minister.
MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad said Yayasan Prihatin was launched to ensure the welfare of officers as well as their families.
He said the fund would be used to assist those who require financial aid and this would be done through certain MACC programmes.
“Anyone may contribute to the fund to support the founding of Yayasan Prihatin. All contributions will be recorded to ensure transparent management,” he said.
