Malaysian, Philippines naval officers meet at border waters

atm-philiphineSANDAKAN: The Royal Malaysian Navy’s (RMN) commanding officer of KD Selangor today held a meeting with the Philippines Navy (TLF) at the Malaysian-Philippines border waters, five nautical miles from Taganak Island, in the Philippines.

The meeting was held on board the KD Selangor between commanding officer Kairishahrizal Salehin of the the RMN and BRP commanding officer Emilio Liwanag of the TLF.

During the meeting, they exchanged operational information followed by discussions on visits and the exchange of officers between the two vessels to further strengthen bilateral ties between the RMN and the TLF.

In a statement issued today, the Sandakan Naval Base Strategic Communications Division, said the meeting was initiated after the implementation of the Trilateral Maritime Patrol (TMP) by Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

The TMP INDOMALPHI joint naval patrol was launched on June 19 in Tarakan, Indonesia involving the Malaysian, Indonesian and Philippines navy.

According to the statement, the joint patrol was the result of the commitment of the three Asean countries in an effort to combat terrorist activities and ideologies, thus enhancing security in the Sulu Sea and its surrounding areas.
