Anti-Najib campaign: Dewan to decide next PM
PETALING JAYA: The Save Malaysia campaign to oust Najib Razak said today that it is up to the Dewan Rakyat to decide on his successor.
However, it must be someone who will put the interests of the nation and the rakyat first before self, otherwise the campaign would be revived, said Kamarudin Jaffar of the Citizens’ Declaration secretariat.
“The person must be someone who will fight corruption and abuse of power and restore the independence of the institutions and the rule of law in the country,” he said in a statement today in response to the frequently asked question on who would replace Najib.
The Citizens’ Declaration was signed on March 4 by about 50 people, most of them opposition politicians, supporters of former premier Mahathir Mohamad, and a few civil society activists.
Suggestions have often been made that the campaign, now known as Save Malaysia, was aimed at installing Dr Mahathir’s son Mukhriz as prime minister.
Kamarudin said the campaign would abide by democratic conventions that the person to take over would be the one who commands the confidence of the majority of the members of the Dewan Rakyat.
The 37-point declaration contains a list of grievances about Najib’s handling of the affairs of 1Malaysia Development Bhd and calls for his ouster and the restoration of government institutions.
He urged Malaysians to sign an online copy of the document, available at:
