Kit Siang: Unite to deny Adenan two-third majority

PETALING JAYA: Lim Kit Siang has urged the Pakatan Harapan opposition alliance to close ranks in order to deny the Barisan Nasional a two-third majority in the next state assembly.

Speaking in Miri at the opening of a DAP election centre today, Lim said the BN was certain to be returned to power, with Adenan Satem as chief minister, in the state elections on May 7.

He said Pakatan Harapan parties should demonstrate discipline and commitment to defend the 14 seats won in 2010 and to make a breakthrough by winning new seats in the rural hinterland.

“Can Adenan and BN be denied victory in at least 28 state assembly seats so as to deny the new Sarawak state government a two-third majority?,” he said.

He acknowledged that it would be “a very tall order” for the alliance of DAP, PKR and Parti Amanah even with arrangements with local Sarawak parties for one-to-contests against BN. “It will be an impossible mission if the one-to-one electoral pact is violated, resulting in multi-cornered fights,” he said.

Lim, who is DAP parliamentary leader, said the party’s victory in six state assembly seats in 2006 was a harbinger of the 2008 national general elections in which the Barisan Nasional lost power in Penang, Selangor, Perak, Kedah and Kelantan. DAP’s doubling from six to 12 seats in the 2010 Sarawak elections heralded the 2013 parliamentary elections in which Barisan Nasional from Putrajaya lost the popular vote.
