KUCHING: Sarawak DAP is to field its first Malay candidate in a Malay-majority seat, Stakan, in Sarawak’s elections as it announced it would go all out by contesting 29 seats, equally split into 14 seats with Dayak and Chinese majorities.

Its sole Malay candidate is expected to be Abdul Aziz Isa, a special aide to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chien Jien, although his name was not announced officially.

It is believed that Abdul Aziz Isa will contest against Ali Mahmud of PBB, brother of the former chief minister and present governor, Tun Taib Mahmud.

Abdul Aziz before had been touted to stand in Batu Kitang, before seat negotiations between parties in Pakatan Harapan were finalised on Thursday.

The 29 seats announced by Chong included Tasik Biru, which had been claimed by PKR.

The full list of seats to be contested by the DAP are:

Tasik Biru, Padungan, Pending, Kota Sentosa, Batu Kawah, Stakan, Mambong, Kedup, Bukit Semuja, Simanggang, Repok, Meradong, Pakan, Ngemah, Bukit Assek, Dudong, Bawang Assan, Pelawan, Pelagus, Katibas, Baleh, Murum, Tanjong Batu, Kemena, Samalaju, Piasau, Pujut, Senadin and Mulu.

The party is also expected to run into PAS opponents in Pujut and Samalaju.

At the last state election in 2012, the DAP won 12 out of 15 seat they contested. Chong also said most of those who won then would defend their seats.

The candidate list will be diversified by race and gender, and will be announced on Wednesday.

Chong would not respond to Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian’s complaint that the seat allocations were different from what the state party had decided.

“Some of our party members are disappointed that the seats were taken but we have to do that in order for (the) one to one fight with Barisan Nasional. They will now use their resources to help with the campaign. We have to work now, only nine days until nomination and 20 days to the election. I would like to say I am proud with the spirit of togetherness,” he said.

The seat allocations were finalised after a meeting between DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng and PKR deputy president Azmin Ali in Kuala Lumpur.

The state elections will be held on May 7. Nomination day is April 25.
