Chin Tong is latest member of the banned

PETALING JAYA: Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong of the DAP was turned away at Sibu airport this afternoon and sent back to Kuala Lumpur, although party leader Lim Guan Eng and Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow had gained entry to Sarawak this morning.

Perak assembly member Wong May Ing, who had travelled to Sibu with Liew, said the immigration officer could not show her any blacklist of opposition politicians.

Wong had asked for the list so that those banned would not attempt to enter the state. “But the immigration officer said even they don’t know who is on the list, and need to check when someone arrives at the airport,” she was quoted as saying.

Seremban MP Anthony Loke, who is DAP organising secretary, and Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, who is assistant national publicity secretary, had been barred from entry in the past week.

However, party supremo Lim Kit Siang was allowed to enter on Friday.

Earlier today, Lim Guan Eng urged the state government to allow entry to his “generals” and to bar him instead. He complained that the ban left the DAP to fight the coming state election without field commanders.

The state government, which has autonomous immigration powers, has said it would deny entry to “unsavoury elements” for the duration of the election campaign, but peninsula-based opposition politicians were welcome after the election.
