Guan Eng to Adenan: Bar me, not my generals

KUCHING: DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng has urged Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem not to bar Lim’s “generals” from entering the state for the Sarawak general election.

“If you want to bar, bar me lah not the other leaders. How can you expect us to fight when all the generals are banned,” said Lim at a press conference here.

“You’re looking at least at 10, all my top general who in the barred list maybe after nominations more (DAP) leaders will be barred.”

Lim and Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow were able to enter Sarawak this morning unimpeded, although several DAP politicians have been deported in the past weeks under Sarawak’s autonomous immigration powers.

Repeatedly calling the entry bar unfair, Lim lamented that without his “generals” and DAP national leaders, fighting the Barisan Nasional in Sarawak would be an uphill battle and not on a level playing field.

He said banning some “division chiefs” like Sungai Besar Umno head Jamal Yunos was hardly comparable as the opposition leaders were national leaders and only came to Sarawak for legitimate political activities.

Lim said that to have a level playing field, only Prime Minister Najib Razak should be allowed to enter and not deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other ministers.

Lim said he had been allowed to enter this morning because of a lot of pressure over a move to ban other leaders such as Afif Bahardin and Abdul Malik Kassim of PKR last week.

Other politicians barred are DAP’s Anthony Loke, Teresa Kok, Tony Pua and Teo Nie Ching; PKR’s Nurul Izzah Anwar, Tian Chua, Shamsul Iskandar, Zuraida Kamaruddin, and Sim Sze Tsin; and Amanah’s Mohamad Sabu.

Adenan has repeatedly said the entry bar was to keep out “unsavoury elements”. The ban was temporary for some politicians and they would be allowed to enter the state after the elections.

The Sarawak elections will be held on May 7, with nominations filed on April 25.
