SIBU: Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong became the latest of a number of DAP leaders from Peninsular Malaysia barred from entering Sarawak when he arrived at Sibu Airport this afternoon (Apr 16).

Liew arrived at 2.41pm with two others: Pantai Remis MP Wong May Ing and his assistant. Liew was barred while the other two were allowed in.

Sarawak DAP vice chairman David Wong confirmed the incident, and said he was disappointed with the state government for manipulating Sarawak’s autonomy in immigration.

He said Sarawak’s autonomy rights in immigration did not stop non-Sarawakians from entering the state for legal activities; it barred them from seeking jobs and other undesired activities.

He called on the chief minister to furnish the full list of people from Peninsular Malaysia who were barred from entering.

“Liew is supposed to be here for the DAP forum on Saturday night, where he would speak with Lim Kit Siang and other leaders. Liew will also be here as a volunteer during the election campaign to man the operations rooms in Sibu, Bintangor and Sarikei.

“He had taken this role in the previous elections in Central Sarawak.”

Liew Chin Tong had also served as member of Parliament for the Bukit Bendera constituency in Penang from 2008 to 2013. He holds the portfolio of Political Education Director and is a Central Executive Council member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP).

Liew was first elected to the Malaysian Parliament in the 2008 election. In the 2013 General Election, Liew wrestled the Kluang Parliamentary seat in Johor from MCA’s Hou Kok Chung.
