Apologise for Najib smears, Salleh tells Dr M
PETALING JAYA: Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been urged to apologise to the prime minister, Najib Razak, and to all Malaysians for allegations about a RM2.6 billion donation he received in 2013.
Communications minister Salleh Said Keruak said Najib had been consistent with his response that the funds were donated by the Saudi government.
Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Adel Al-Jubeir, confirmed yesterday that the donation to Najib was from his country and that “nothing was expected in return.”
Salleh said the statement concurred with findings by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the Attorney-General that there were no elements of corruption involved and that the money was not from the government’s investment arm, 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
“Now that the truth is out, Tun Mahathir should apologise to the prime minister and Malaysians for what he had done which had caused certain parties to have a negative view of the country,” he said, according to Bernama.
The Umno Veterans Club has also urged Dr Mahathir to apologise to Najib, the government, Umno and 1MDB.
The club’s secretary, Mustapha Yaakub said the confirmation of the donation by Al-Jubeir proved that all the accusations made against Najib were lies.
“Tun Mahathir has accused Najib of receiving RM2.6 billion from 1MDB. He also created chaos in Umno that resulted in the suspension of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Umno deputy president.
“He also got some NGOs and Malaysians to believe his lies and influenced the foreign media, especially the Wall Street Journal, to smear Najib’s name and the Malaysian government,” he said, Bernama reported.
