SIBU: The growing support by Chinese towards Barisan Nasional (BN) during the just concluded state election can be sustained with the continuation of the state’s people-centric policies.

The analysis of trend pertaining to Chinese support for BN in the 11th Sarawak election by Special Affairs Department (Jasa) revealed the overall support stood at 37.4 per cent.

“The support by Chinese in the just concluded state election can and will be sustained because the support is not just on personality but on policies.

“As long as policies are implemented; as long as the Chief Minister come with better policies then this kind of support can and will be sustained.

“Not just the overall policies for the state but the choice of winnable and effective candidates, the support will therefore, be sustained,” PBB permanent chairman Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar told reporters on Friday when asked if the Chinese support for BN could be sustained.

The state Legislative Assembly Speaker was met after officiating at ‘A Night of Unity – BN’ here, organised by Sarawak Jasa.

State Jasa director Hassan Busu shared the department’s findings during his opening speech.

Hassan noted there was an increase of 12.4 per cent in Chinese support from 25 per cent in the last parliamentary election to 37.4 per cent in the 11th state election.

He further noted the support of Chinese voters in the Chinese-majority areas was at 36.9 per cent.

Hassan added the trend of support among Chinese voters in Bumiputera majority areas stood at 46.8 per cent.

Adding on, he noted the voters’ turnout in the 11th state election was 70.01 or 777,018 registered voters who cast their ballots.

He said compared to 10th state election, the voters’ turnout was 67.4 per cent.

Hassan said the overall popular votes garnered by BN this time was at 62.2 per cent compared to 55.4 per cent in the 2011 state election.

The opposition on the other hand, secured only 37.8 per cent.

Assistant Minister for Science Research and Biotechnology Dr Annuar Rapaee, Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong and political secretaries to Chief Minister Abu Seman Jahwie and Faridah Osman were among those present.
