Tree planting effort attracts hypermarket staff, MRC members
KUCHING: Giant Hypermarket staff and Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Kuching chapter members planted 400 new mangrove trees at the Kuching Wetland National Park (KWNP) in a joint tree planting event yesterday.
According to MRC representative Chong Choon Chiang, the event is the third installment involving MRC in tree planting activities at KWNP.
“Many question why MRC is involved in this environmental programme as disaster relief is our core focus. MRC looks beyond this as we are also doing our part to counter climate change,” he said.
“For example, tree planting in mangrove areas is one of the measures that have proven helpful especially during a Tsunami.”
Chiang added that the government had realised the importance of mangrove forests especially in the wake of the 2004 Tsunami disaster.
“MRC is also active and committed in the ‘Plant A Billion Trees’ environmental conservation programme,” he added.
KWNP is in close proximity to around 6,000 households and about 64 wildlife species have been recorded within the area, with Crocodiles and Proboscis monkeys being the main attractions.
The joint tree planting event was participated by 50 staff from Giant Hypermarket and 20 MRC members.
Among those present were Giant Hypermarket regional manager Anbanathan Pomramu and Forest Department Ramsar Management Unit executive Irmadiana Ardi.
