PBB asked to make its stand clear on hudud

KUCHING: Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has been asked to make clear its stand on Parti Islam Se-Malaysia’s (PAS) proposed hudud Bill, which was listed in the Parliament order paper on Thursday.

DAP state chairman Chong Chieng Jen said this is necessary as PBB is the backbone party for the state Barisan Nasional (BN).

According to Chong, state BN Members of Parliament did not object to the tabling of the private member’s Bill by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

“PBB should make a clear stand on this especially when the Chief Minister himself has rejected the implementation of the law in Sarawak,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Chong said it is useless for Sarawak leaders to merely voice their disapproval in the media while making a “U-turn” in Parliament.

According to him, the Bill was obviously backed by Umno.

“Without the backing of Umno, such matters will not be tabled in Parliament,” he said.

Chong said if passed by Parliament, it would go against the formation and fundamentals of the Malaysian Federation.

Meanwhile, it was reported that the debate for the hudud amendment Bill was brought forward after a motion was moved by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman under Standing Order 14(2).

It was also reported that Abdul Hadi had requested the Bill be debated during the next Parliamentary meeting in October.

The Bill previously appeared in Parliament order papers in April and June last year but failed to be tabled and debated.

It seeks to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 to allow the Kelantan PAS state government to impose hudud punishments for crimes, except for death sentences.

The hudud punishment would only apply to Muslims in Kelantan.
