Soon Koh clears air about leak of lunch meeting

KUCHING: UPP president Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh wants to put on record that he is not the one who leaked the news about a lunch meeting with SUPP president Datuk Dr SimKuiHianand other SUPP members to the press.

He said after the May 20 lunch, the Chinese daily International Times published in detail about the lunch attended by six persons –Wong himself, UPP secretary-general George Lo, Dr Sim, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan, Datuk Wee Kok Tiong and Datuk Ling Chiong Ho.

The fact that SUPP representative Wee owns International Times should be a strong indication that the information came from SUPP representatives, Wong reasoned.

Following that publication, other newspapers also picked up the story.

“Since then also, I have been asked by the press to confirm or to comment on it.

“The fact that the press has been looking for me shows that I’m not the one who leaked the news out in the first place,” said Wong.

He, however, admitted that he mentioned about the lunch meeting during a UPP press conferenceon Thursday (May 26) – days after a series of news about it had already been published by the Chinese media.

“By then, the lunch meeting was no longer a secret.

“Now, I have to say this again because there have been accusations about me being the one who leaked the news out – I would like to point out that I have been honouring the gentlemen’s agreement between those attending the lunch meeting about keeping it a secret.

“I only mentioned it (during UPP press conference) because by then, it was no longer a secret.”

Wong said he agreed to attend the meeting because he was truly open to any proposal that would again reunite the Chinese community and consolidate Chinese solidarity.

“I would not jeopardise any opportunity to do something good for the Chinese community,” the minister told thesundaypost.
