NATURAL REMEDIES FOR NOSEBLEEDS. FIRST AID & EMERGENCIES

Bleeding from the nose can be very frightening, but it isn’t usually a sign of anything serious and very often can be treated at home.

The bleeding usually occurs from only one nostril. In case the bleeding is heavy enough, the blood could fill up the nostril on the affected side and then overflow within the nasopharynx, spilling into the other nostril to cause bleeding from the both sides.natural-remedies-for-nosebleeds-first-aid-emergencies

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR NOSEBLEEDS. FIRST AID & EMERGENCIES

PINCH THE NOSE

As Top 10 Home Remedies advices, this is the easiest way to stop the nosebleed. Pinching the nose sends pressure to the bleeding point in the nasal septum and that helps stop immediately the blood flow.

  • You need to sit up straight with your head tilted slightly forward. Tilting the head backwards might actually be very dangerous and lead to vomiting.
  • Pinch the soft part of the nose below the bony bridge.
  • Do this for around 5 to 10 minutes. You need to breathe through your mouth.
  • Release the pressure gently and sit quietly for another 5 minutes.
  • Repeat if it’s necessary until the bleeding stops.

Note: You shouldn’t lay flat, but tilt your head back or put your head between your legs. Also, you must not blow your nose.

ONIONS

Onions have a blood clotting agent and they are rich in both Vitamin C and bioflavonoids which strengthen the damaged blood vessels.

Method 1: Cut one onion on thick slices. Press one slice under your nose and inhale. The bleeding is going to stop within couple of minutes.

Method 2: in each nostril put 2 or 3 drops of freshly extracted onion juice. Repeat as needed.

ICE

According to How Stuff Works, ice is very helpful for stopping bleeding, constricting the blood vessels, and, if the nose is injured, reducing inflammation.

Place some crushed ice into a plastic zipper-type bag and cover it with a towel. (A bag of frozen vegetables works fine, as well.) Place the compress on the bridge of your nose and hold well until the bleeding stops.

If the bleeding eventually stops, you won’t need to go to a doctor. However, in some cases you might need further treatment from your GP or in hospital.

Seek medical advice if:

  • A child under the age of two has a nosebleed
  • You have nosebleeds that regularly come and go
  • The bleeding is heavy and you have lost a lot of blood
  • The bleeding continues for longer than 20 minutes
  • You are having difficulty breathing
  • The nosebleed developed after some serious injury, such as a car crash
  • You swallow a large amount of blood that makes you vomit
