Zaid lodges police report against Selangor Umno, Noh Omar
Former minister Zaid Ibrahim has lodged a police report against Selangor Umno and its chief Noh Omar over their reported threat to gather outside the Selangor palace this Sunday.
“I take a serious view of Selangor Umno’s action and assume that they have committed the act of criminal intimidation under Section 503 of the Penal Code,” said the senior lawyer turned politician in his report lodged at the Damansara police station this morning.
Zaid also noted that the gathering was planned to demand action against him, in reaction to his tweeted remarks on Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s rebuke of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“I would like to explain to Umno, the meaning of my tweet, the concept of constitutional monarchy means that a sultan cannot be partisan in matters of politics or administration, with any parties or individuals, what more in an election year,” said Zaid in his police report sighted by Malaysiakini.
Yesterday Noh (photo) urged the people of Selangor to attend the gathering and express support for their ruler.
Sultan Sharafuddin, in an interview with The Star on Tuesday, said that Mahathir has not apologised for his "Bugis pirate" remark.
The ruler also pointed out that Mahathir "never apologises," and described the nonagenarian as someone with an inferiority complex who would not permit others to do better than him.
“He (Mahathir) is an angry man and will burn the whole country with his anger,” the sultan warned, adding that he does not wish to see politicians exploiting race and religious issues that could be detrimental to the nation.
In an interview with Utusan Malaysia yesterday, the sultan also said Zaid should go back to Kelantan if he disagreed with his remarks.
After tweeting a Malaysiakini report on the sultan's remarks, Zaid said: "Selangor sultan should be careful with his words. No one is immune when the country burns.”
"When some rulers play politics; they must know the consequences. Don't think there's no price for partisanship,” he added.
This had triggered the wrath of Selangor Umno leaders, including Noh and Sungai Besar chief Jamal Md Yunos, who had yesterday torched cardboard cutouts of Zaid’s images that also bore the words “pengkhianat, kurang ajar, biadap" (traitor, rude, insolent).
When contacted, Zaid, however, told Malaysiakini that he did not lodge a similar police report against Jamal.
“Jamal is (only) a small fish, he breaks beer bottles,” he said, alluding to the red-shirt chief’s previous stunt outside the Selangor Menteri Besar’s office in Shah Alam.- Mkini
