MIRI: There will be a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) programme conducted by the State Security Unit (UKN) in Bario this April 28.

According to the event’s organising chairperson, Kijan Toynbee, the programme which is scheduled to take place at Bario Asal longhouse from 8am to 5pm, would be attended by about 130 participants.

“The CERT programme

helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities.

“When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organise spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site,” she said.

Kijan added that CERT members could also help with non-emergency projects that would help improve the safety of the community, thus the programme would be beneficial to rural and longhouse

folk.

The event on that day will commence with a launching ceremony, expected to be graced by Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Mulu, Datu Gerawat Gala.

After the programme, there will be a closing dinner which is expected to be officiated at by the UKN director Datu Dr Yusoff Nook.

“We expect some 400 guests at the dinner, comprising participants, residents from the surrounding areas as well as invited guests,” said Kijan.
