Tiong calls on aspirants to close rank behind BN
MELUAN: Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) members who aspired to represent the party in the state election but were not selected by the BarisanNasional (BN) leadership were urged not to vent their frustration by working against the selected candidate.
Making the call SPDP president Dato’ Seri Tiong King Sing added that all party members must focus their energy, time and thoughts on ensuring the victory for BN.
“Leave aside attempts of political vengeance to avoid ‘internal sabotage’ and come to a consensus whereby all individuals selected and dropped should cooperate in winning the seats allocated to the party.”
Tiong was speaking at the presentation of Minor rural projects(MRP) funds amounting to RM 380,000 to 65 longhouses and Church organisations at RumahLiban Entabai Julau last Friday.
The funds were handed over by Rolland Duat who has been picked by the party to contest in the Meluan seat under the BN banner in the election.
In his speech Rolland pledged to work for everyone in the constituency and that no one would be marginalised regardless of their political affiliation.
“I would make it a point to treat everyone equally if I were given an opportunity to be your elected representative”
His promised was met with loud applause from the crowd of more than 800 who gathered at the longhouse from the surrounding area.
Among those present at the MRP handover ceremony were SPDP Senior Vice Chairmen and Political Secretary to Chief Minister Datuk Paul Igai and Liew Ah Lek, Political Secretary to Chief Minister Alexander Asing and SPDP Meluan branch chairman BelayongJampong.
Belayong who was one of the potential candidates for Meluan said although he was not picked by the BN top leaders as the BN candidate he would work with Rolland and promised to give his undivided support to him to help deliver the seat for BN and SPDP.
He also thanked the party president for willing to spare time out of his tight schedule to visit Meluan and meet the people at the grassroots level.
Responding to Belayong’s promise, Tiong thanked him for his understanding and willingness to stay united with the party.
The party president also reminded all SPDP-BN candidates for the 11th State Election to keep in mind that, once they were elected they should practice “people first” policy in serving the people.
“If the elected are not doing their jobs, I will surely take necessary actions on them”
Tiong also announced RM10,000 fund allocation for RumahLiban to upgrade their longhouse.
