Man killed after car crashes into lorry

LAHAD DATU: A man was killed in an accident involving a Perodua Viva and a lorry at Km 23 of Jalan Lahad Datu-Sandakan on Saturday.

The Viva driver, Nielsen Stephen, 27, from Pekan Beluran was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Lahad Datu Hospital.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Hamzah Ahmad yesterday said the incident occurred at about 3.55pm.

“Initial investigation found that the victim was heading towards Sandakan from Lahad Datu while the lorry was coming from the opposite direction when he crashed into the lorry.

“The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital while the lorry driver suffered no injuries,” he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

Meanwhile, district Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Apandi Mahmood said his department received an alert on the accident at 4.19pm and rushed to the scene with seven personnel.

Apandi said upon arrival they found that the victim had been removed from his vehicle by a member of the public and taken to hospital.
