KAPIT: The People’s Technical Education Foundation of Sarawak (Yayasan Teras) has, since its establishment 10 years ago, spent more than RM5 million to sponsor Dayak students pursue technical education.

Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing, who is the deputy chairman of the foundation’s board of trustees, said the foundation was trying its best to help Dayak students excel in education as education was the key to moving up in life.

However, he admitted to The Borneo Post in an interview, that it would take time – probably one generation (about 25 years) – to see the fruits of its labour.

He said the Chinese had no problems with education as they had been emphasising on it for thousands of years as they knew its value.

“That is why they (the Chinese) are doing fine today.”

Masing, who is also PRS president, admitted that he was able to move up because of education.

“I want Dayaks to do what I did – giving priority and attention to education.”

On the coming state election, he said it would be his eighth, but he never assumed he would win until the final vote was counted.

He said he never assumed, too, he would retain the seat uncontested because the opposition’s tactic was to keep him locked up in Baleh and prevent him from moving out of the constituency to help other Barisan Nasional candidates campaign.

“Unless a miracle happens, of course.”

In general, he said rural voters must rally behind BN as the federal government was under the BN.

“Rural voters cannot be out of mainstream politics, which is under the BN government.”
