SIBU: Reviving the Sibu BN Visionary Team is now on the cards as Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, the direct BN candidate for Bawang Assan, is confident that all three direct BN candidates here will get elected this coming state election.

“We hope that with the three of us (Wong, Kapitan Datuk Janet Lau – direct BN candidate for Pelawan and Datuk Tiong Thai King – direct BN candidate for Dudong) being elected plus Dr Annuar Rapaee (BN candidate for Nangka), we will have four (BN assemblymen).

“Four is enough to form BN VisionaryTeam to revive what was I would say diminished before. We hope to do something for people of Sibu,” he told reporters after UPP’s lunch reception at a leading hotel here yesterday.

At the same function, UPP’s mascot, an eagle, was launched.

Turning to the opposition, Wong was optimistic that in the next five, 10 or even 20 years, they would not be able to overturn the BN government in Sarawak.

He reasoned that among others that the people were under the great care of BN, particularly in the rural areas.

“As you know, our CM Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem has requested for almost a billion ringgit in less than a year or so, to implement the rural transformation programme, taking care of rural people, hoping to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas.

“So, I am sure people of rural areas will only recognise the ‘Dacing’ symbol and will continue to support BN government, which shows care, concern and love for the people.”

He further pointed out that there were only 15 Chinese-majority seats out of the 82 seats, which DAP, the main opposition party, tried to capture.

“No matter how many seats they capture, even, if they capture all the 15 seats, it will not be sufficient to change the government.

“So, I am very confident that in the next five, 10 or even 20 years, you (opposition) don’t have a chance to overturn BN government in Sarawak. Of course, so long as BN government continues to take care of Sarawak,” Wong, who is Second Finance Minister, said.

Asked on Chinese votes, he hoped with the personal popularity of Adenan which had soared to 81 per cent, there would be a swing back to BN.

“Definitely, there is a swing but I don’t know how big the swing is to enable some of the Chinesemajority seats to fall into the hands of BN.”

Adding on, he said in marginal seats where some BN candidates lost by small margins previously, he hoped with Adenan’s popularity, there would be enough swing(among the Chinese community) to recapture them.

Asked on his view that some SUPP members had complained that certain UPP members were dragging their feet on seeking support for BN, he said: “You only have to go to the ground and seehow much dragging legs they have done to us.

“Even in Bawang Assan, Dudong areas and less in Pelawan area, they are pulling our legs.

“They are still on the ground telling people not to vote for us. But we will face all challenges.”

To a question if he would ask those concerned to stop, he said:

“This is a democratic country and it is not for me to ask (them) to stop. The party should apply the partyhood. The president of SUPP can command support of the members; he is the one, who shouldask them to stop, and not me. I can’t do anything. I just have to face the challenges,” he said.

Meanwhile, in Bawang Assan, Wong is expected to face DAP’s Chiew Sung Ngie and State Reform Party (STAR) candidate Wong Sing Wei.

Elsewhere, a three-corneredfight is expected in Pelawan asJanet Lau will battle with DAP’s David Wong and STAR’s Priscilla Lau.

In Dudong, it will be a multicornered fight. Tiong will have to deal with DAP’s Yap Hoi Liong, STAR’s Mary Ting and independent candidate Casper Kayong.

Among those present were Wong’s wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong, political secretary to the chief minister Pau Kiew Chuan and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairman Dato Andrew Wong.
