SIBU: The compound of An-Nur Mosque here became the flag-off point for some 100 cyclists yesterday, who gathered for a programme run by WeR4U.

The cyclists — comprising members of Sibu Motorsports Club, General Operations Force (PGA) Sibu Cycling Club and the Amanita squad of IPD Sibu — rode their way around the mosques and past neighbouring villages before returning to the start point.

Oganising chairperson Marieati Ibrahim said the key objective was to promote cycling as a form of an exercise that anybody should be able to do.

“Apart from that, it also aims to touch base with the villagers, whom the cyclists meet and mingle with during their ride.”

A telematch, jointly conducted by WeR4U and Senior Citizens Activity Centre (Pawe) Sibu, also took place at the mosque’s compound.

It involved some 200 senior citizens and 35 children from the local unit of Sarawak Orphans Welfare Organisation (Peryatim).

Dr Annuar Rapaee, who is the Barisan Nasional candidate for Nangka, also joined in the fun.

In his brief remarks later, Dr Annuar – also a cardiologist – said cycling was a good form of exercise for any individual wanting to stay in shape.

“For the elderly people, I would suggest for them to go swimming. On this, I hope to write to Sibu Municipal Council to request for a special session (for elderly individuals) at the public swimming pool in Delta Housing Estate,” he said.

According to Sibu Pawe chairman Abang Hashim Abang Zainudin, the centre now has 513 members.
