Give SUPP chance to prove its worth — Dr Sim

KUCHING: Voters are urged to give Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) a chance to prove its strength in really fighting for the people.

In making this call, Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Batu Kawah, said it is important that the right people are in power to safeguard interests of Sarawakians.

The SUPP president also said new leaders of the party understood the concerns of Sarawakians and would really fight for the people if given the chance to win the seats they contested.

“What we worry about now is we are not given a chance. If there is no chance how are we going to prove our strength? Many people think SUPP is a weak party.

“So give us a chance to show that we are not weak, that we can deliver our promise to make dreams of transformation for betterment a reality,” he told supporters and party members at the launch of SUPP Southern Zone Mobilisation Rally at the SUPP headquarters Sa’ati Hall on Saturday night.

Deputy party president Datuk Richard Riot Jaem who also spoke told his comrades not to be discouraged by negative words thrown to them by the opposition and the party’s ‘enemies’.

He said SUPP might not have performed well in the last state election but was now in full gear to win the state election to bring back glory to the party.

He expressed confidence that SUPP will win all the 13 seats allocated to it to give Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem a bigger mandate to lead the state.

Earlier in his speech, SUPP Pujut branch chairman Adam Yii, who is also the BN candidate for Pujut constituency, said while SUPP was unhappy with Adenan’s decision to give eight of the seats traditionally allocated to it to direct BN candidates, the party would leave the issue aside for now.

“We must focus on winning the 13 seats we are contesting. And we must ride on Tan Sri Adenan’s train and be part of Adenan Team and continue to play our original role – a party by Sarawakians, a party for Sarawakians.

“Tonight (Saturday) I’ll address you all not just as comrades. I’ll address you all also as fellow Sarawakians. This Sarawak election is effectively a referendum on whether we empower our Sarawak BN chairman to have his own mandate so that he can further demand federal to release and return our rights and safeguards that have been eroded since the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963,” he said.

He said anyone in his right frame of mind would agree that Adenan should be returned as Chief Minister.

“The only uncertainty is whether our fellow Chinese Sarawakians will join in to support Tan Sri Adenan, to give him a complete mandate,” he said.

Those who also spoke were BN Padungan candidate Pau Kiu Sung, BN Pending candidate Milton Foo, BN Batu Lintang candidate Sih Hua Tong, BN Kota Sentosa candidate Wilfred Yap and BN Batu Kitang candidate Lo Khere Chiang.
