Bersih 2.0 launches hotline for public complaints on S’wak election

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersih 2.0 has launched a public complaints hotline for the Sarawak election, where citizens can report on phantom voters, incidents of bribery and other electoral offences.

This follows the Election Commission’s (EC) announcement today that nomination day will be on April 25 and polling day on May 7.

“This is because despite campaigning for free and fair elections for almost a decade, Bersih 2.0 is still concerned about the integrity of the electoral process in Malaysia and in particular for the upcoming Sarawak Election,” the electoral watchdog said in a statement today.

Bersih 2.0 claimed that in the state polls held in 2011, a team of observers, led by Malaysian Election Observers Network (MEO-Net), noted that the election was not free and fair.

Observers, it said, obtained evidence of widespread vote buying in Tamin, Belaga and Bawang Assan.

“The EC and the government have not made any substantial reforms to ensure that the elections will be free and fair.

“Therefore, Bersih 2.0 calls on Malaysians to play a proactive role in protecting the integrity of our electoral system.”

Bersih then called for volunteers to become “impartial observers” during the campaign period and polling day to watch out for electoral fraud.

Those who have information about electoral fraud and misconduct during the Sarawak state election can file a report with Bersih 2.0’s Public Complaints Hotline via telephone 03-79314444, SMS/WhatsApp 011-31339820, email pemantau@bersih.org or via the website at http://ift.tt/22wcyfY.
