DAP’s chances in Repok dealt a blow as member quits
PETALING JAYA: DAP’s chances of retaining the Repok seat in the upcoming Sarawak election has been dealt a blow after the party’s Sarikei secretary resigned.
According to a report by The Star Online, Wong Ching King, a former teacher, had cited the “autocratic style” of some state DAP leaders as the reason for his resignation besides being unhappy at how some candidates were chosen internally by state leaders.
However, it is believed that Ching King quit after he was not picked to contest the Repok seat, where it is understood the personal assistant to a local party MP would stand instead.
The report further stated that some DAP members aligned to Ching King had asked for veteran party member Chong Siew Chiang to replace the personal assistant, a woman in her twenties as the Repok candidate.
Siew Chiang, 78, is the father of DAP Sarawak Chairman Chong Chien Jen.
The Repok seat is understood to be problematic for the DAP as its assemblyman, Wong Hua Seh, suffered a stroke soon after the 2011 state election, thereby rendering him unable to fully serve his constituency. Ching King’s resignation now has only served to complicate matters further.
In the 2011 election, Hua Seh defeated Sarawak United People’s Party’s (SUPP) David Teng Lung Chi with a 2,679 vote majority.
The SUPP’s new candidate for Repok is Huang Tiong Sii, a tycoon who has been active in the area in the past few months.
