Kidnapped Malaysian calls father, says group is safe
PETALING JAYA: One of the four Malaysians abducted in Sabah waters earlier this month called his father Tuesday night to say the group was “safe.”
Wong Teck Kang, Wong Teck Chii, Johnny Lau and Wong Hung Sing were kidnapped by armed militants on April 2 while returning to Malaysia from the Philippines.
The mother of 21-year-old Lau, the Borneo Post Online reported, confirmed that Teck Kang had called his father, Chee Ming but did not reveal the whereabouts of the group.
Lau’s mother said she would leave the matter to the police and the Malaysian Government to work with Filipino authorities to protect the four and bring them home safely.
“We can only pray and hope now,” she was quoted by Borneo Post Online as saying.
Lau’s mother however did not reveal whether a ransom was mentioned by the militants.
She also said she was informed of Teck Kang’s call because the two families are neighbours in Pulau Li Hua.
Meanwhile, local newswire Bernama reported that the Foreign Ministry had contacted the ambassador of the Philippines to Malaysia, Jose Eduardo Malaya to reiterate the request for assistance from the Philippines Government to secure the early release of the four.
