KUALA LUMPUR: Hindraf Makkal Sakthi, a human rights NGO working with displaced estate workers and the stateless, has lodged a written complaint with Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar on banned preacher from India, Zakir Naik (Dr), planning to officiate at a seminar entitled, “Concept of God in Major Religions”, on April 15 in Kuala Lumpur. “This appears to be breaching the boundaries and encroaching into other religions,” added Hindraf Chairman P. Waythamoorthy in the letter.

“Muslims are protected through Article 11(4) to restrict and control propagation to them. It cannot be used as a sword to ridicule other beliefs or to propagate their faith to non-Muslims.”

The NGO wants the seminar aborted and Zakir Naik deported to India, and blacklisted, on the grounds of national interest and national security. “He’s known to have supported acts of terrorism around the world. He has been banned by various countries.”

Hindraf, reiterated Waytha, was strongly opposed to conversion by propagating and ridiculing other beliefs. “The Federal Constitution guarantees the right of every citizen to practise his or her religion peacefully.”

“That does not give any right for anyone to speak and/or belittle another religion. This character, Zakir Naik, has perpetually been doing this in his speeches throughout the world.”

The seminar, pointed out Waytha, was jointly organized with the Multiracial Reverted Muslims (MRM), an Islamic evangelical group, which had previously been accused of “covertly” amending the religious records of non-Muslims. “The government has clearly stated that such discourse will only agitate non-Muslims.”

“However, it appears that Zakir Naik and his people are still being allowed to continue with such seminars.”

The controversial Hidayah Centre Foundation (HCF), involved in ensuring the welfare of new converts, was the other sponsor for the April 15 seminar, noted Waytha. “It appears that all the local organizations involved with Zakir Naik were connected with activities relating to conversion of non-Muslims.”
