Amanah cannot compete without support of DAP, PKR

Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah

KOTA BHARU: Amanah does not have the capacity or capability to stand alone and compete with other parties without the support of DAP and PKR, said PAS vice-president Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah.

He said it had been proven that Amanah could not be a substitute for PAS in Pakatan Harapan as bandied about earlier because the party was not able to gain the support of voters without the help of other parties.

“In my opinion, Amanah has failed in its role to replace PAS. Although it garnered a large number of votes in the Sungai Besar parliamentary constituency, I believe 90% of the votes came from DAP and PKR, (and) not really Amanah’s votes.

“And I believe that if Amanah had stood alone like PAS it most likely would have lost its deposit, this is my opinion,” said the Deputy Chief Minister of Kelantan here yesterday.

Barisan Nasional won handsomely in both the constituencies with its candidate Mastura Mohd Yazid polling a majority of 6,969 votes in the Kuala Kangsar by-election, while Budiman Mohd Zohdi won with a majority of 9,191 votes in the Sungai Besar by-election.

Mastura polled 12,653 votes in a four-cornered fight, beating Perak PAS women wing chief Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad who received 5,684 votes, Kuala Kangsar Amanah vice-chief Prof Dr Ahmad Termizi Ramli (4,883 votes) and independent candidate Izat Bukhary Ismail Bukhary (54 votes).

Budiman garnered 16,800 votes in a three-cornered fight, defeating Sungai Besar Amanah chairman Azhar Abdul Shukur (7,609 votes) and PAS’s Dr Abdul Rani Osman who is also Meru assemblyman (6,902 votes).

Mohd Amar said Amanah gained more votes over PAS in Sungai Besar because the Chinese community there supported DAP.

He said the results at the ballot boxes in the two constituencies showed Amanah had failed to capture the hearts of Malay voters and indicated that the party was not able to gain the support of the community.
