We are reportedly stepping up our interest in England and Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend.

According to the Daily Mirror and the Telegraph, the 24-year-old wide man has a £10.5 million release clause in his contract and we have now joined a growing list of would-be suitors.

They both claim Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Southampton, and West Ham have all registered an interest in the player.

It’s important to stress that this is just rumour, but it’s certainly an intriguing one.

Townsend was probably Newcastle’s best player in the final ten games of the season as they almost performed a miracle and avoided the drop. His pace and width is something we sorely lacked at times last season (and is something England are sorely lacking at this summer’s EUROs).

It’s easy to forget how good he was when he first broke onto the scene at Spurs, and how good he was in an England shirt a couple of years ago.

That said, at 24 he is no longer merely a hot prospect. How much better can he realistically get? Is he ever going to become top class?
