Special police team to probe Bill Kayong’s murder
KUALA LUMPUR: A special team has been formed to investigate this morning’s murder of Sarawak Opposition politician Bill Kayong.
This was announced by Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar, who said the team will include the Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department as well as several officers from Bukit Aman.
“We have formed a special team to look at the motive behind the murder.
“We urge members of the public who may have witnessed or have any information pertaining to the case to come forward and assist the police,” he told a press conference at the Bukit Aman police headquarters here.
The nation’s top cop also advised the public against speculating about the case, adding that police were aware that the case was “very sensitive”.
Kayong contested in Bekenu for PKR in the recent Sarawak election.
The 43-year-old was an advocate of social issues in the state, especially on native customary rights and native land, which he talked of at length during his election campaign.
He was shot dead near the Emart One-Stop shopping mall in Senadin, Miri, at 9am today.
The Borneo Post reported that the shooting took place at a traffic light intersection of the Kuala Baram bypass.
“His pick-up truck, which bears the party logo, was shot through the driver’s side window and he was reportedly shot once in the neck,” the daily reported.
Kayong contested in the Bekenu seat against Rosey Yunus of Barisan Nasional and independents, Jou @ Peter Jelin and Austin Sigi Melu. He is the political secretary to Miri MP Dr Michael Teoh.
On a separate matter, Khalid said five investigation papers on former Premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad had been opened. He, however, did not divulge any details on what the elderly statesman is being probed for.
“Some we have passed to the Attorney-General, while the rest are still under investigation.”
