Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka needs rebranding

KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) requires rebranding in order to keep up with advancing technology and attract the interests of Gen Y, said Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid today.

Mahdzir pointed out that DBP was facing several challenges in the 21st century because of an increasing number of people who were born in the digital age.

“Children these days are digital natives. So how is DBP going to be sustainable and maintain the book industry?

“It has to be proactive and brave. It has to keep up with the advancing technology,” Mahdzir said at a press conference after a DBP function today.

He added that one way was to change the name of DBP, to rebrand the image of the organisation.

Elaborating, he said the Gen Y generation’s impression of DBP was that it was “old fashioned” and “outdated”.

“There is nothing wrong with the name. We just want to rebrand it to make it more contemporary.

“The marketing strategy and plan of communication has to change. We must be creative and innovative,” he said.

On book publishing by DBP, Mahdzir said he was “thankful” that the sales of books had increased since DBP became commercial-minded in 2014.

He also stated that the publishing of books had to fulfil the market’s need for it to be sustainable.

“It cannot be stereotypical. Instead, it has to be in accordance to what the market wants. It has to be more creative, innovative and easy to read such as informative comics, interactive books, illustrated novels…The progress of language and literature has to always be fresh in order for DBP to stay relevant,” he said.
