Discrimination in the hospitality and tourism sector

Majlis Rangkaian Kesatuan Sekerja Antarabangsa Malaysia (UNI - Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI MLC) have received numerous complaints from female hotel employees where they have been told by their management that they are not allowed to wear a headscarf (hijab) while at work.
Similar incidents have also been experienced by students in the hospitality and tourism courses. They have been instructed to remove their headscarves before going on internships. If this instruction is not followed, the interns will not be accepted to do their internship.
This instruction by hotel managements has created a negative impact on the outlook of a female Muslim staff who wears a headscarf outside working hours but not during working hours. The perception of these employees has also created a negative impression on the public and their families.
Most parents would like to see their children work in this industry because of the promising growth. Unfortunately, they have been disqualified for their internships by the company on unreasonable conditions.
An organization should aim to create an environment where Muslims and non-Muslims can practice their religions freely and peacefully. It is the reality of living in a multi-racial, multireligious and multi-cultural society that we all have to internalise.
By disallowing their female Muslim staff to wear headscarves at work, not only does this deny them of their rights to practice their religion freely but also limits them from pursuing a career of their choice.
UNI MLC urges the Human Resource Minister Richard Riot Jaem to intervene and address this issue so as to avoid any form of discrimination among female hotel employees. Every individual in this multi-cultural country must be allowed to do what his religion provides as long as it does not affect his job performance.
UNI MLC once again urge the Human Resource Minister to treat this matter seriously and come up with guidelines so that employees in the hotel industry are not sidelined or discriminated further. - Mkini
