Dr M: Yes, I can declare my assets, but...

Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad, whose critics claim had amassed a huge fortune for himself and his children during his 22 years as prime minister, is prepared to declare his assets.

However, 92-year-old politician said he does not know whether he would be a candidate in the coming general election.

“Yes. I can declare my asset but I don't know whether I will be a candidate or not?You want me to be a candidate?” he added during a press conference in Parliament this afternoon.

Mahathir was asked whether Harapan candidates would follow the example announced by PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.

Earlier today, Rafizi said some 30 prospective Harapan election candidates, including incumbents, are expected to declare their assets over the weekend.

They are among individuals assisted by Invoke Malaysia, a voter mobilisation and research group founded by the PKR leader.

Mahathir said that the event had was an Invoke initiative and did not concern Harapan.

Will Harapan follow suit?

When asked if Harapan will compel its candidates to declare their assets, Mahathir said the matter has to be decided by the Harapan leadership council.

"Until it is been discussed in the meeting, I am not at liberty to make any statements," he said.

On Harapan's bid to register as a coalition through the Registrar of Societies (ROS), Mahathir said the council has resolved to meet Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Harapan submitted its draft constitution and logo to the ROS in July.

Should elections be called before the ROS can approve the new coalition, the coalition parties will have to use their own logos instead of a common logo.

Mahathir also revealed that top party leaders will hold a two-day meeting on Dec 1 and 2 to strategise.

"We will exchange ideas and decide on our election approach. There is also the issue of increasing the number of parties in Harapan," he said.
