Tahfiz fire teen suspects may be spared death penalty

The police have yet to submit their investigation papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) despite having concluded their probe on the alleged arson at the Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah Tahfiz Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali, who just came back from his pilgrimage in Mecca, said he looked at the case seriously.
"I am still waiting for the investigation papers, but I am looking at it seriously," said Mohamed Apandi at a conference today.
Police arrested seven teenage suspects for the fire at the tahfiz school, which claimed the lives of 21 students and two adults last Thursday.
Apandi did not rule out the possibility of charging the teen suspects, aged between 11 and 18, under Section 302 of Penal Code for murder.
He said, however, that even if a minor is charged under the provision, which carries a death sentence, the Child Act 2001 will prevent capital punishment from being carried out.

Police are probing case under murder and Section 435 for causing mischief by fire.
According to Kuala Lumpur Police chief Comm Amar Singh, "mocking" between students of Darul Quran Ittifaqiyah tahfiz school and a group of local teenagers in Jalan Datuk Keramat prompted the revenge arson attack.
The teen suspects were picked up between 6pm on Sept 15 and 2.30am on Sept 16.
Amar confirmed that two gas cylinders were brought from the lower floor to the top floor of the building where the fire started, and that an accelerant was also used. - Mkini
