Bring it on, MB tells ex-MB
Kedah Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah is unfazed by the prospect of his predecessor Mukhriz Mahathir contesting against him for the Bakar Bata state seat in the next general election.
He said the Bersatu deputy president is entitled to contest wherever he wanted to, but at the same time, questioned if Mukhriz is not confident of defending his Ayer Hitam seat.
“... As a leader, is he not confident of winning in his own constituency or has he realised that he has neglected Ayer Hitam all this time... we know.
“There is also talk of him wanting to contest the Langkawi parliament seat. But as a leader, Mukhriz should continue in his own constituency...no need to run.
“If you are to lose, then lose in your own constituency. This is what people call a leader. If you want to run to save yourself, then why become a leader?” he told Umno Online.
Ahmad Bashah was appointed as menteri besar of Kedah after Mukhriz resigned in Feb 2016, amid his father Dr Mahathir Mohamad's campaign to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Meanwhile, the menteri besar also commented on the opposition targetting Kedah as a frontline state in the coming general election.
However, Ahmad Bashah said this would not be a simple task.
“...We have done our work and are constantly vigilant. Furthermore, the people have experienced life under opposition rule.
“I am confident that whatever is put forth by the opposition to garner support would not influence the people... as the opposition, they would always promise the moon and stars,” he added.
Therefore, the menteri besar hoped that the people would learn from their past experience of how difficult it was for them when BN was the opposition in the state.
“I feel that the people are not willing to ruin the future of Kedah and that of the coming generations based on the opposition's sweet promises,” he added.
Ahmad Bashah also pointed out that the prime minister himself wants to help Kedah as seen in the various allocations in Budget 2018.
Kedah fell to the opposition in the 2008 general election, but BN recaptured the state in the 2013 polls.
Kedah is also the home state of Mahathir, who was the MP for Kubang Basu from 1974, until he relinquished the prime minister's post in 2003.- Mkini
