Felda awarded RM2m in defamation suit against Wan Azizah, 3 others

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today has ordered PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, former deputy president Syed Husin Ali and two others to pay Felda and Felda Global Ventures (FGV) RM2 million in aggravated and exemplary damages for two defamatory articles which appeared in the party newspaper Suara Keadilan. 

Suara Keadilan and writer of the articles, Rusnizam Mahat, were also named as the defendants. 

This is over the publication of two articles in 2010 titled "Felda Bankrap" (Felda Bankrupt) and "Bina Bangunan RM662 juta Hanya Libatkan Tiga Individu" (Only three people made the decision, on RM662 million new office).

Justice Su Geok Yiam said the initial amount of RM70,000 set by the senior assistant registrar was excessively low.

It would trivialise the damages awarded on a statutory body, she said.

Justice Su also noted that this has affected the share prices of FGV.

It is learned that the damages of RM2 million awarded to be one of the highest in recent years.  

Justice Su also ordered Wan Azizah and the other defendants to pay RM25,000 costs to the plaintiffs.
