PKR claims Harapan leaders agree not to dwell on inconvenient past

The realignment of political forces is a common occurrence and Malaysia is no exception. The nation has witnessed its fair share of political twists and turns over the decades.
However, none could have predicted that Dr Mahathir Mohamad would join a coalition of opposition parties, let alone spearhead it, and work with those whom he had an acrimonious relationship with in the past.
Critics have never failed to accuse Mahathir and his current allies of hypocrisy and political amnesia, recalling how the two were at each other's jugulars when in opposing camps with accusations of racism, corruption and dictatorship.
In view of this, PKR whip Johari Abdul told Malaysiakini that its best for Harapan to steer clear of the past and focus on the future instead.
“Yesterday is a liability but tomorrow is an opportunity,” he said.

According to Johari, this issue was raised during the coalition's two-day retreat in Putrajaya last week in preparation of the coming general election.
"The past is the past, look at the future and tomorrow, that's what we had agreed (during the retreat),” he said.
Citing an example, the Sungai Petani MP said Mahathir has been requested to continue engaging the Malay electorate without dwelling on the past.
“Forget whatever (happened) in the past, talk about where do we move to from here," he added.
Harapan leaders, Johari said, should not go into details regarding past events which could prove counterproductive, such as the sacking and subsequent jailing of Anwar Ibrahim in 1998-99 and the Internal Security Act crackdown dubbed Operasi Lalang in 1987.
"When you talk about yesterday, I can dig out whatever Tun (Mahathir) did in the past 19 years to Anwar, he also put (Amanah president Mohamad Sabu) Mat Sabu and (DAP veteran Lim) Kit Siang in prison (during Ops Lalang).
"If we keep talking about yesterday (the past), both Tun and Amanah can dig up (issues), then (the problems between) Amanah and PAS will never end... (The problems between Harapan parties) we and Tun will never end. What is the point?" he said.
Amanah is a splinter party of PAS, which was a member of Harapan's defunct predecessor Pakatan Rakyat. PAS has now severed ties with its former allies.
Meanwhile, Johari said Harapan leaders who attended the retreat also agreed to resolve the differences between them and not speak ill of each other.
Another problem saddling Harapan is that internal disagreements and disputes tend to spill into the open, leading critics to argue that the coalition is not united and therefore cannot lead the nation.
DAP deputy secretary-general Teresa Kok, who was also present at the retreat, could not remember if the issue of not dredging up the past was discussed as numerous leaders had raised a myriad of issues.
However, the Seputeh MP said she agreed with such a stand.
"I can't remember if we spoke about this. But if you ask me, I agree with what he (Johari) said," she told Malaysiakini.- Mkini
