KUALA LUMPUR: The country’s housing developers have been urged to help the government to build more affordable housing projects.

Deputy Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Halimah Sadique said developers should also be more aware of the current economic situation and give priority to build houses, business premises or any facilities which were not only affordable but also beneficial to the people.

Halimah said the government had carried out various initiatives for that purpose such as the 1Malaysia People’s Housing Project and also worked with various companies in the country including housing and property developers.

“Every business needs profit for its sustainability, however, I feel that all the initiatives like building an affordable housing project will still bring profit to the developer.

“In addition, the government will continue to strengthen the existing cooperation with industry players and believes the results will be enjoyed by all,” she told a press conference after attending the Second Property Insight Prestigious Developer Awards here.

The awards acknowledged and highlighted quality developments of some of Malaysia’s best developers and their signature projects that currently shape the landscape of Malaysia.

At the event, Sime Darby managing director (Property Division) Jauhari Hamidi was named the ‘Personality of the Year’ while Andaman Group managing director Dr Vincent Tiew was awarded the ‘Outstanding Young Developer’.

Rivertree Group managing director and chief executive officer Simon David Leong won the ‘Leadership Excellence Award’ while Hatten Group of Companies managing director Colin Tan was named the ‘Most Aspiring Personality’.
