PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reached a dead end with his campaign to unseat the prime minister, according to Umno Supreme Council member Nazri Aziz.

In a press interview, Nazri said Dr Mahathir’s winning streak was over, after having successfully toppled other prime ministers and political leaders in the past.

Nazri, quoted by Malay Mail Online, said Mahathir’s obsession with removing Najib Razak would be unsuccessful even with the help of the foreign media, citing Mahathir’s recent interview with the Australian current affairs programme Four Corners about 1Malaysia Development Bhd and the 2006 murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.

He said Dr Mahathir was willing to allow the political crisis to damage the local economy and investor’s confidence, as tools to use against Najib.

Mahathir has waged a year-long campaign to force Najib to step down as Umno president and prime minister. Nazri noted the former premier’s past success against Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tun Hussein Onn and his own successor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, as well as political challengers such as his former deputies Musa Hitam and Anwar Ibrahim, and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

“This man has won in many battles in the past,” Nazri was quoted as saying. “He managed to drop them all but has failed to bring down Najib and so he is very angry.”

He has resigned from Umno and his contract as Petronas adviser was terminated. He has also relinquished his positions with Proton, University Teknologi Petronas, Langkawi Development Authority and the Tioman Island Development Authority.

Earlier in March, Dr Mahathir teamed up with opposition politicians with a Citizens’ Declaration calling for Najib’s resignation, followed by a People’s Congress last week.
