Sarawak’s 111111 election: Speaker gives notice to EC

KUCHING: The Speaker of the Sarawak stae assembly has notified the Election Commission of the impending dissolution of the assembly on April 11 to pave the way for the 11th state election.

Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar said the elections must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the state assembly. He has sent a letter to EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah after receiving the instrument of dissolution signed by Yang Dipertua Negeri, Abdul Taib Mahmud.

Chief Minister Adenan Satem had announced on Thursday that the state assembly would be dissolved on April 11.

Mohd Asfia drew attention to the number 11 that figured in relation to the election, saying the assembly was being dissolved on April 11 for the 11th state election and there were 11 additional seats.

“… the numbers coincide with 111111,” he said.

Mohd Asfia said there would be contests in 82 constituenties, 11 more than in the previous election in 2011.

Election Commission headquarters in Putrajaya confirmed having received notice of the dissolution. The EC would only meet after the assembly is dissolved, to set the dates for nomination and polling, among other things.
