PETALING JAYA: DAP Secretary-General Lim Guan Eng should stop boasting that his party was multiracial if he was going to stoke racial tempers all the time, according to MCA spokesman Ti Lian Ker.

Ti described as “absolute cowardice” Lim’s failure to admonish Umno grassroots leader “Ali Tinju”.

Ti who heads the MCA’s religious harmony bureau, said that Lim, as chief minister of Penang, should be a responsible leader by admonishing racist actions, instead of exploiting isolated incidents and blaming Umno or MCA for it.

Ti added that Lim should be aware that as communal parties, Umno and MCA helped bridge “the communal gap and water down racial anxieties” and the two parties had also sought racial or religious consensus towards a harmonious society.

“To incite hatred towards communal parties like MCA and Umno who had served as a mediator and a moderator in our plural society all these years is very irresponsible and naughty of the Chief Minister. ”

Ti said this in response to Lim’s advice to former soldier Mohd Ali Baharom (Ali Tinju) that the latter should have protested against MCA if he wanted to blame a political party for a Chinese man’s alleged insults against Muslims.

Lim had also stressed that DAP’s membership was open to all races, while the party never claimed to represent a particular ethnic community, unlike Umno and MCA who championed the interests of the Malay and Chinese communities.

Lim had said this after Ali Tinju led a protest in front of DAP’s headquarters yesterday.

Ti then advised Lim and others like him to stop blowing isolated incidents out of proportion. He said people like Ali Tinju were a minority in Malaysian society.

As a leader, Lim should show the DAP’s disgust with such behavior instead of “lending them legitimacy by associating their misdemeanors to responsible political parties like BN. It is disheartening to note his failure as a leader to handle individuals like Ali Tinju. He should admonish Ali instead of hiding behind a multiracial tag in absolute cowardice.”
