Gerakan Wanita wants MPs to reject amendments to Act 355
Gerakan Wanita has passed a resolution to urge parliamentarians to reject the proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or Act 355.
The resolution was passed at Gerakan Wanita’s 30th National Delegates Conference held at the PGRM Tower today.
The proposed amendments was first brought by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang as a private member’s bill last year, and was fast-tracked by the government in the Dewan Rakyat in May last year.
However, at that time, Hadi had requested for the debate to be postponed. The bill has since been tabled a couple more times but has yet to be debated on.
The controversial bill aims to increase the punishment caps on the sentencing power of the syariah court from RM5,000 fine, six lashes and three years’ jail to RM100,000 fine, 100 lashes and 30 years’ jail.
This has caused the bill to receive brickbats not only from opposition parties but also BN component parties, including MCA, MIC and Gerakan.
The three BN component parties had insisted that proposed amendments to Act 355 are unconstitutional.
Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong and MCA president Liow Tiong Lai had previously vowed that they would quit their minister posts if the amendments were passed.- Mkini
